When
Usman Warraich called up Zainab Qayyum – better known as ZQ – with
an offer to host a magazine show he was producing for Indus Vision,
he had no idea that he was the latest in a long line of producers
who had gone down the same road, only to be disappointed.
However, why Usman received a nod from her when others had
been packed off had little to do with his good looks or powers of
persuasion.
As
ZQ herself explains: “The time just happened to be right.”
Spur
of the moment decisions are this 26-year-old model’s style. Among some of her
more impulsive decisions are her acceptance of Vinny’s invitation to model in a
show (the first time she stepped out on the catwalk), her stint as assistant
editor of Libas International and now
her debut as TV anchor.
And
while the magazine show, Montage, with its predictable video magazine format –
an interview, a fashion showing etc. – can hardly be termed revolutionary, it
happens to be one of the better grossers on the channel, for which the credit
in no small measure goes to ZQ’s slick handling of her job.
“Initially,
my biggest fear was that I would not be able to learn the script by heart. But the Montage crew has been so
understanding about it. From the very
outset, we decided that we would not deal with a definite script. We just
discuss the theme and I end up saying it the way I want to. And since this is Indus Vision and not PTV,
I am allowed to wear jeans and be myself.”
Now
that Zainab has had her first taste of the small screen, is she
planning to jump on the bandwagon
of models-turned-actresses?
“I’ve
really enjoyed Montage and this experience has made me excited about future
possibilities in TV. I’m very
interested in script writing but maybe not right now – I feel that as a compere
and model, my time is limited and I’d like to take full advantage of my youth
while it lasts. Once the offers stop
coming, I’ll get down to writing scripts.
For now, a nice juicy role in a play is what I’m really hoping for.”
Whether ZQ will have a long association with TV as she has
had with modelling or whether this too will prove to be another
one of her passing fancies which include a few months as an Islamiat
teacher and an editorship, remains to be seen.
