A number of ‘star children’ have made their presence felt in the subcontinental
performing arts genre and have created a distinct niche for themselves.
The latest to join the bandwagon is Runa Laila’s only daughter,
Tani Laila, who has recently released an album titled Prothom Bhalobasha
(first love) in Dhaka. “The music is a combination of pop, folk
music and mellow love songs, and so far the response has been pretty
good,” says the young woman from her residence in London, where
she has been studying for over six years. “I think people were curious
as to what I, being Runa Laila’s daughter, had to offer, but they
seem to like it.” Despite her formal training in music, Tani singles
out her mother as her “biggest inspiration. I was actually worried
about her presence at the recording studio because I thought she
would be quite tough, and I wouldn’t be good enough, but she made
me feel really relaxed and I felt that any comments she made on
my singing were very constructive and not critical.”
In Tani’s opinion, “Asian music has come far in recent years. I
especially like all the collaborative work that is being done ?
mixing the old with the new, for example Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and
Bally Sagoo. I think giving music that ‘new’ touch can add a different
perspective to it, and at the same time, encourage a different generation
to listen to it.” Other than music, Tani enjoys volleyball, swimming,
badminton, rollerblading while “reading is my favourite pastime.
It allows a person to escape into their own little world and learn
a lot while letting their imagination run wild,” says the psychology-major
student. As for a music video, it is “only on the cards if Hrithik
Roshan stars in it!”
