Solo Flight

Ujala Farooque

After the success of his debut solo album Haroon ki Awaz, the singer is all set to storm the music scene again, with a new album. Work is underway at his home studio and the release date is about a month away.

Haroon refers to his debut album as ‘a sort of a release’ for himself.  “It was a way to give vent to my ideas and frustrations,” he says.  His second album promises a more laid-back approach and less of venting-out.  It will concentrate more on melody than on rhythm, unlike Haroon ki Awaz, which was all about strong and powerful rhythms with melodies taking a back seat.  “In the first album I just wanted to pump up the volume and feel the beat in my veins.  I did a lot of different things in it.  This time round, I know what I want.  I’m doing less experimenting and more of the stuff that I really feel good doing.”

He talks about the factors affecting the mood of his new album.  “I feel confident. Secure. I don’t have to prove anything anymore.  My first album did very well. It sold 200,000 copies worldwide.  I’ve toured UK and done very prestigious shows.  This time round, I have less to prove.  But I still have the hunger and the motivation to make good music and that’s what’s most important.”

For August 14, Haroon did a collaborative number with Strings and Junaid Jamshed.  “Strings, Junaid and I have always been good friends,” Haroon says.  “It was easy working together because it was a fun environment.”  The video was shot in a mohalla in Saddar and the trio enjoyed the hospitality of the residents, as well as the time spent hanging out with cricketers Waseem Akram and Abdul Razzaq, who starred in the video.

The motivational song ‘Tu Hai Kahan,’ directed by Ahsan and Amna, is about the search for one’s true inner self, and the feeling of “ultimate success” after discovering that inner self.  “There’s a talented person inside all of us,” says Haroon.  “The song is about tapping that person.”
